Don't Go Near the Water
The message of the film Jaws: don’t go near the water. Jaws
is out now and its scaring audiences all over the country. Directed by
up and coming director, Steven Spielberg, the film is a hit at the box
office. Based on a best-seller by the same name the film is set in the fictional Amity Island, a beach goer
getaway. The plot revolves around the beach goers woes when they
encounter a great white shark out in the water near the beach, and the
police chief’s quest to hunt down the animal. After a couple of attacks
on the beaches of Amity, the town is in a frenzy to find the animal.
This is especially true since the town’s mayor failed to act responsibly
by closing down the beaches. His reasoning is that it will hurt local
business by driving down tourism. Although well-intended his decision
caused even more incidents with the shark and the beach goers. Then it is
up to the police chief, a marine biologist, and an expert shark hunter
to capture the beast before it preys on new victims. The shark is
portrayed by three robotic sharks to make it seem more realistic than
using special effects yet, less dangerous than using a real shark. And,
the film stayed true to its location by actually filming sea side in a
northeastern beach and not in a studio. Both decisions were made by Spielberg who wanted to capture a more realistic film. Overall, the camera angles, music, and the use of 3 life sized
robot replicas of the shark made the film visually and audibly
invigorating. The film spans over 134 of pure
thrill. There is no disappointment in how Spielberg manages for
the viewer to jump out of their chair, even when they already know the
shark is coming.

I love Jaws! I would say it is one of my favorite movies. My mom grew up in New Jersey in the 70s and 80s, so she was always terrified of the water and the beach. And it wasn't just her; it was almost everyone in her grade. Anyone who grew up around water when this movie came out was terrified of water and the ocean. I'm really glad I live in Arizona, because I honestly have a slight fear of the ocean because of this movie. It is funny to see how one movie can change a huge groups' perception of a topic, like the ocean. What about you? Have you seen Jaws and do you have a fear of the ocean or anything like that?
ReplyDeleteI would have to disagree with you on this one Edward! I cannot watch this movie because it scared me when I was younger. Adriana, you said “don’t go near the water,” I would change the last word and say,“ don’t go near the movie!” The movie made me never want to go out to the ocean, because my family vacates at the same location the film was made on the island off Massachusetts called Martha’s Vineyard. I know it is pretend, but that scene in the beginning with the shark eating the girl is so bloody, and scarred me for life. I will never swim out in the ocean again!
ReplyDeleteOh man what a classic! I remember the first time I watched this I was both intrigued and afraid. We usually go out to California each year to hang at the beach and after watching this I was always cautious of my surroundings. This movie does bring back memories though, and I believe everyone can say that who has seen this just because of how epic it was. It is crazy to think that the sharks were just robotic sharks and not real ones, they looked so real when I first watched it. Probably because I was young and gullible though ha. What was y'alls favorite part in the movie?
